TOM BAKOS
BIOGRAPHY

With over 30 years of significant general management and technical actuarial experience in various roles within the life insurance industry in the United States, Tom Bakos formed his own actuarial consulting practice in 2000. His primary area of practice is life insurance.

These roles have included Chief Actuary for BISYS Insurance Services, a full service outsourcer for the support and marketing services required in the sale of life, annuity, group health care, and long term care insurance products.

For ten years, from 1989 - 1999 Tom was Vice President and Life Actuary for Guardian Life Insurance Company of America where he was responsible for all actuarial functions related to the individual life line of business.

In the 20 years prior to joining Guardian, Tom filled similar actuarial roles in both large and small, stock and mutual life insurance companies including: Integrated Resources Life Insurance Company in New Jersey; Security Mutual Life Insurance Company in Binghampton, NY; Lincoln American Life Insurance Company in Memphis, TN; and CNA Life Insurance in Chicago.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Tom has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) since 1972.

Tom was elected by the members of the Society of Actuaries (SoA) to a three year term on the Board of Governors beginning in October, 2002. The SoA is an education and research organization with over 15,000 members in over 30 countries. He is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) Council on Professionalism and serves as Chairman of the AAA Committee on Professional Responsibility.

Tom has participated on numerous occasions as a presenter, panelist, or workshop chairman at meetings of the SoA - most recently at the Boston Annual meeting in October, 2002. He served on the faculty of the October, 2001 Illustration Actuary Seminar sponsored by the American Academy of Actuaries. He was a faculty member on the SoA Developing New Nontraditional Products seminar on June 12, 2002 in Rosemont, IL and a presenter at the SoA Product Development Actuary Symposium on June 13-14, 2002 in Rosemont.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
In the past, Tom has also served on the client advisory boards of two reinsurance companies - Cologne Re (1995 - 1997) and Lincoln Re (recently acquired by Swiss Re) (1998 - 2001).

Tom is a regular contributor to Contingencies Magazine, a professional publication of the AAA. He has also had articles published in The National Underwriter and Probe.
